SSC GD Constable Exam: Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation Strategy
This guide is free to read. It explains the exam in simple words and gives practical ways to prepare. Our Aptitude and Reasoning mock tests are a separate product and are still being prepared. You can register for them above.
1. How the selection works
The SSC GD Constable recruitment normally has several stages. The online written exam is the first one, and the later stages are shortlisted from it.
- Computer Based Examination (CBE): the written test described in this guide.
- Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST): height, chest and running or other physical standards.
- Medical examination.
- Document verification.
Dates, vacancies and the exact rules change with each notification, so always read the official notice on ssc.gov.in.
2. Exam pattern and marking
- 80 questions of 2 marks each, so 160 marks in total.
- Four sections of 20 questions (40 marks) each.
- Total time: 60 minutes. That is about 45 seconds per question on average.
- Negative marking: 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.
3. Section-wise syllabus and tips
| Section | Main topics | Quick tip |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | Analogy, classification (odd one out), number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, ranking, Venn diagrams, statement and conclusion, non-verbal reasoning | Practise one topic per day and learn the standard patterns. Speed comes from recognising question types. |
| General Knowledge & General Awareness | Indian history, geography, polity, economy, basic science, static GK, important days, sports, awards, books, current affairs | Read a short daily current-affairs summary and revise the previous week every Sunday. |
| Elementary Mathematics | Number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest, time and work, time-speed-distance, mensuration, simplification, data interpretation | Learn tables, squares, cubes and fraction-percentage values by heart. Shortcut tricks save a lot of time. |
| English / Hindi | Reading comprehension, error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases, active-passive, direct-indirect speech, spelling. Hindi: vyakaran, muhavare, paryayvachi, shabd shuddhi | Read a newspaper editorial daily and note 5 new words. Choose the language you are strongest in. |
Topics are based on the general SSC GD syllabus. Check the latest official notification for any change.
4. Time management in the exam
With 60 minutes for 80 questions, a plan helps. Here is a sample you can adjust after taking mock tests:
- Start with the section you are strongest in, so you collect marks early and gain confidence.
- Sample split: Maths about 18 minutes, Reasoning about 15, English/Hindi about 12, GK/GA about 8, and the last 7 minutes for review.
- If a question takes more than about a minute, mark it and move on. Return only if time is left.
- Do not spend 5 minutes on one question while easy ones are waiting.
5. How to handle negative marking
A correct answer gives +2 and a wrong answer gives -0.25. Each wrong answer costs a small amount, but many careless wrong answers add up.
6. How to use mock tests properly
A mock test only helps if you review it. Taking test after test without analysis wastes your effort.
- Take it like the real exam: one sitting, 60 minutes, no phone, no breaks.
- Review every wrong and skipped question and find out why you lost the marks.
- Keep an error notebook for formulas, facts and tricks you missed.
- Track your section-wise score across tests to see your weak area clearly.
- Revise the weak topics for a few days, then test yourself again.
7. Sample weekly plan
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Maths topic + 20 practice questions |
| Tuesday | Reasoning topic + 20 practice questions |
| Wednesday | GK/GA notes and current affairs |
| Thursday | English/Hindi grammar and vocabulary |
| Friday | Revision of the week + weak topics |
| Saturday | One full-length timed mock test |
| Sunday | Mock test review and error notebook |
Adjust the plan to your own time and strengths. Regular practice matters more than long, irregular study sessions.
8. Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring GK/GA and current affairs because they look easy.
- Memorising shortcuts without understanding the basic concept.
- Taking mock tests but never reviewing the mistakes.
- Leaving physical preparation until after the written result.
- Changing study material every week.
